-The marine
cemetery
The magic cemetery of Mahdia extends from one
bank to another of the
headland, its whiteness immaculate. With the sharp yellow of its field
of
daisies in spring, the deep silhouettes of ramparts which surround it,
or the
wreck of a boat on the ashy rock of the close creek, this marine
cemetery gets,
like nowhere elsewhere, an appeasing, a spiritual relaxation.
It Treasure of Mahdia
“To broad of Mahdia, to a few
kilometers in the North-East of this
prestigious city, of the sponge fishermen announced in 1907 the
presence of
submerged ancient objects. The layer contained columns, capitals; the
excavations made it possible to note that it acted in fact of a whole
boat
charged with objets d'art for construction with a sumptuous
building… what a
rich cargo! In addition to the columns, capitals, and superb marble
craters,
one withdrew from the chiefs of bronze work, such as Agar, the Eros
Citharède,
Hermes de Dionysos, Dwarf dancing, the Race of the Satire…
and the marble
sculptures, like this bust of Aphrodite of a completely divine beauty.
